The history of Breckenridge is quite fascinating. Breckenridge was settled in 1859 as a gold and silver mining town. In hopes to gain a post office in 1860, this town was named after Vice President John Cabell Breckinridge. Following the boom and bust cycle of the gold rush Breckenridge actually became a ghost town. The ski business brought Breckenridge back to life and provided the motivation to renovate the town's vintage Victorian buildings. There are many newly built Victorian-style structures, as well, housing shops, restaurants, stores, bed-and-breakfasts, and cafes. An attractive river walk follows the Blue River through town. Almost all new construction or renovation in the town must conform to the Victorian style of architecture. This Victorian ambience is most noticeable along Main Street. Many improvements to the Breckenridge ski area combined to make Breckenridge one of the best ski vacation destinations this winter. Vail Resorts International has invested over 40 million dollars into the Breckenridge Ski Resort this year with the addition of more terrain and more lifts. The addition of 165 acres of intermediate terrain on Peak 7 includes seven new trails. Angels Rest, Wild Dog, Fort Mary B, Swan City, Lincoln Meadows, Pioneer and Wirepatch will be served by the new high-speed detachable, six passenger Independence Super Chair. The new Peak 8 Super Connect, also a high-speed detachable quad-lift, replaces the old 4 chair and simplifies transferring from Peak 9 to Peak 8. It starts a few hundred yards above the Beaver Superchair and terminates near the Vista Haus at the top of Peak 8. Breckenridge was the first major resort to offer snowboarding (in 1985): Today, boarders will find two terrain parks. Freeway Terrain Park, the more advanced of the two, is home to a superpipe. Winter in Breckenridge offers excitement and romance with skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and helicopter skiing. Other fun activities include snowmobiling, snowshoeing, sleigh riding, site seeing, and hot air ballooning.
